Lampier Sprints to Coalville Wheelers Road Race Win

Steve Lampier took a narrow victory in an exciting race as he topped the Coalville Wheelers Road Race on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Velosure-Giordana rider had been in every break of the race before going clear with Madison Genesis’ Alex Peters on the final lap. A 15-man move picked up steam early on and built a 20 second gap before the bunch pulled them back. A number of riders attempted to attack throughout, making it a high-energy contest. Eventually, four riders managed to take off and opened up a 15 second gap. Lampier was alive to the threat and managed to bridge across to make a leading pack of five, although Kit Gilham was dropped shortly after. The leaders worked together and pulled 20 seconds clear of the chasers with three laps remaining. Then, on the final lap, Lampier used a climb to pull away from his rivals but Peters managed to keep pace with him. Lampier and Peters were seven seconds ahead of everyone else and it became a two-horse race as the last kilometre of racing came into sight. It was Peters that attacked first but Lampier was able to respond and keep pace with him. Peters wasn’t done yet though and once again he attempted to lost Lampier. However, Lampier had enough in the tank to make one final push for victory and this time the attack stuck as he crossd the line first.

Lampier said after the race: “There were a few skirmishes and I thought I was just wasting a lot of energy so I sat back a bit. But then when the four riders got away, I knew I had to get over to them and I managed to do that. Coming up to the line, I managed to just get on Alex’s back wheel and won it from there. I’m riding in the Elite Road Series next week and then the day after we’re off to France to race there so this was a good workout in preparation for that.”
