Our club mainly revolves around racing, there is a chain of events throughout the year to keep you buzzing and feeling in good health. Since 1976 we have been so lucky in having our own clubroom which provides us with a home for our activities, with a solid core of volunteers who keep the tea flowing and the place ship shape. We do also like to have the odd glass of “fizzy pop” together with a good natter, meeting member’s spouses, partners, children and other family and friends.
Our ploughman’s suppers are a feature of the start and end of the Wednesday time trial events, with a BBQ in the summer as a welcome feast after the Clubs Championship 25 mile race. We also have a slide show…can’t wait for the digital age…which is generally a good evening to see how cool you look in the bright lights and have others pass favourable comments about you…err…maybe that’s stretching it a bit!
Most years, we also organise a trip abroad to catch some early or late season sun for a week’s training and again some more “fizzy pop”. This has also been an opportunity for us to mix socially and talk about other things and not just cycling! Also there have been trips to see the Tour De France and track racing at the Derby and Manchester Velodromes. With other weekends away and social evenings at the club house, there’s a packed programme of socials to join.
At the end of the year it’s time for our annual dinner, prize presentation and disco bop. It is the time when we are honoured for our achievements, slap each other on the back, tell stories about how we’ll be even better next year and reflect how great it is to be a Coalville Wheeler.
